What's HIMAA?
The Health Information Management Association of Australia, (HIMAA Ltd.) began in 1949 as the New South Wales Association of Medical Records Librarians and the Victorian Association of Medical Librarians. In 1955 the Australian Federation of Medical Records Librarians (AFMRL) was established.

The profession continued to grow, which prompted constitutional change. In 1975 the AFMRL become the Medical Record Association of Australia.

In the 1980s, the growth in the professional responsibilities, and an increased focus upon evaluation in health care led to the establishment of a number of specialist undergraduate university health information management degrees in several Australian states.

During the 1990s, the profession flourished, driven by an increasing focus on technology and a growing impact of the profession upon resource allocation decisions in the health sector.

Mindful of the increased importance of the profession, in October 1996, members voted in favour of proposed changes to the Association’s constitution. The Association was re-incorporated as a national company - the Health Information Management Association of Australia Limited.

Today, employment opportunities for qualified health information managers abound. HIMAA Ltd, through its professional membership, and its Branch structures, stands at the forefront of health information management in Australia.

Strategic Focus
The Health Information Management Association of Australia recognises several external drivers are having a major impact on the Australian health care system in the new millennium.

Health information management has assumed a critical function, driven by the uptake of information technology (IT), an increased focus on economic evaluation of outcomes, and a move of resources beyond traditional hospital based care.

In this environment, health information has become the fulcrum around which resource allocation decisions revolve.

To assist our members in leading this change, the Association places a particular emphasis on professional development. Professional development activities target both HIMAA members, and others wishing to develop skills in associated health information management spheres, such as clinical coding.

The Association aims to achieve financial growth through marketing its capabilities as a specialist provider of educational materials and workshops and courses in health information management.

To showcase leading edge theoretical and practical developments in health information management, HIMAA conducts an annual conference. Conferences target members of the Association, as well as the information and health industries.

Throughout each year a range of state-based seminars and workshops run by local special interest groups complements this exposure.

Governance
The Health Information Management Association of Australia’s business and policy is controlled by an elected, voluntary, eight member Board of Directors. The Executive Officer and Association staff carries out the business and policy decisions determined by the Board of Directors.

HIMAA Ltd has branches in all Australia states and the ACT.

Members working voluntarily throughout Australia at national, state and local levels conduct meritorious work. The Board receives input from these representatives, and from nominated members who represent the Association in various forums.
