Australian Health Ministers have established the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care to lead and co-ordinate improvements in safety and quality in health care at a national level.  Focusing on quality improvements in both the public and private sectors, the Commission identifies issues and policy directions and recommends priorities for action.  It has responsibilities to report publicly on the state of safety and quality, disseminate information and knowledge, and provide strategic advice to Health Ministers on 'best practice' thinking to drive quality improvement.  The Commission is funded to 31st December 2010.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with national expert groups, jurisdictions and the private health sector (including primary care and private hospitals) to develop national health information standards for safety and quality.
  • Manage health information standards development project activities pertinent to Commission safety and quality programs, including monitoring and reporting on progress of projects; providing recommendations about managing risk and identifying and resolving issues.
  • Developing briefings to address specific issues in the area of health information standards for the Commission, its standing committees, expert working groups, and NHISSC and public release.
  • Manage and identify priority issues for the Commission within the NHISSC information standards development and reporting agenda.
  • Undertake and commission research and literature reviews on the national and international health information standards/
  • Provide secretariat and participate in the work of expert working groups and dedicated for a for the development of health information standards, including the preparation of background papers, presentation and briefing papers as required.
  • Participate as required in related safety and quality initiatives within the information Strategy work program.
