Royal Melbourne Hospital is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Health Information Manager who has a keen interest in coding and casemix to join our team of 14 HIMs.

As one of Australia's leading tertiary teaching hospitals, Royal Melbourne Hospital offers varied casemix including trauma, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery and orthopaedics.  Our cases are interesting and complex providing the perfect opportunity for those who want to be challenged on a daily basis.

In this position you will be responsible for:

  • The management of the Health Information Service

  • Co-ordinating responses to medico-legal and other requests for patient information

Health Information Management volunteer assignments in the Pacific.

Are you looking for an adventure?
Are you interested in using your professional skills in a new and interesting environment?

A number of opportunities for motivated HIM professionals with a desire to help others are likely to become available soon.  One urgent need is for VIDA volunteer HIM for Tonga for 12 months to commerce immediately.

VIDA (Volunteering for International Development from Australia) and AYAD (Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development) are part of the Australian Government's volunteer program.  Funded by AusAID, the VIDA and AYAD Programs place skilled Australian volunteers in developing countries in the Asia Pacific region.  Volunteers work with local counterparts to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable outcomes in the communities in which they work through skills and knowledge exchange, institutional strengthening and capacity development.  Please see the VIDA or AYAD program websites for more details.

The Health Information Systems (HIS) knowledge Hub, based at the School of Population Health at the University of Queensland, Brisbane is acting as an Australian Partner Organization (APO) with VIDA and AYAD to recruit and support volunteer health information managers to be placed in the region.

VIDA or AYAD assignments are likely to be available in a number of countries, including Tonga and Vanuatu.  The length of assignment is negotiable from 6-24 months.  Most work will involve refining national health information and medical records policy and practices while providing on-the-job training to the local staff. 

Potential volunteers must:

  • hold a Bachelor Degree in Health Information Management or similar;
  • have a minimum of 5 years experience working in hospitals including the management of medical records departments;
  • be Australian citizens and permanent residents and aged 18 or above.
