FROM THE CEO In this edition:
HIMAA Board Changes In recent months Natalie Sims and Stefan Perkovic have had to resign from the Board for personal reasons. Both Natalie and Stefan have rendered long service not only to the Board but previously to their respective state branches. Thank you to Natalie and Stefan for your support of HIMAA. The casual vacancies generated by the resignations have been filled by Catherine Garvey and Travis Ingram. AR-DRG Classification System The CHSD has been contracted by the Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) to produce the next editions of these classifications - collectively known as the AR-DRG Classification System - between July 2010 and June 2013. This work is currently undertaken by the National Centre for Classification in Health (NCCH), University of Sydney (for ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS) and the Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) (for the AR-DRG). The AR-DRG Classification System project will operate under a new centre within CHSD known as the National Casemix and Classification Centre (NCCC) The Australian Centre for Clinical Terminology and Information (ACCTI) will remain in place with a priority on clinical terminology development - notably, SNOMED CT. Some staff from ACCTI will be working at NCCC from July 2010. A website for the NCCC will be operational from 1 July 2010 and is available HERE. The NCCC will be located at the University of Wollongong's Sydney Business School in Liverpool St, Sydney (ACCTI location) and also some team members will be located at the CHSD, University of Wollongong main campus. Some important milestones in the 2010- 2013 workplan:
The NCCC expects to continue the services currently provided to coders through the NCCH and is aiming for a smooth transition in these services. Committee structures will be much the same as they are now and consultations for content development of the next editions of ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS and AR-DRG will begin in mid/late 2010. PICQ is the exception and will continue to be supported by NCCH. Enquiries about PICQ should be directed to the NCCH. Public submissions for AR-DRG will move from the DoHA website to the new NCCC website. The NCCC aims to streamline the public submission, query and education processes for ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS and AR-DRG during this project. A consultation process to inform the development of the next editions of ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS and AR-DRG components will begin synchronously in mid/late 2010. This will be the first time that ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS and AR-DRG have been developed in parallel and NCCC expects that there will be some useful synergies in working this way. Enquiries about the NCCC and this project, should be directed to either of the following:
Hussein Al Bishi Appointed to Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health (MoH) Hussein Al Bishi is a graduate of the Curtin University HIM program. Those who attended the HIMAA National Symposium in Canberra (2008) and the HIMAA National Conference in Perth (2009) may well remember Hussein. As part of the Saudi Arabian MoH's national e-health initiative, Hussein has been contracted by the MoH to lead the rebuilding of the Health Information Services Departments in 234 hospitals throughout Saudi Arabia. The implementation and educational activities related to the introduction of ICD-10-AM will be part of Hussein's responsibilities for the next 3-5 years. WA Private Hospitals Special Interest Group (PHSIG) A PHSIG has been formed in Western Australia and is aiming to hold its first meeting in early August. A PHSIG has operated very successfully for many years in NSW. The next meeting of the HIMAA Board (22 July) is scheduled to review a draft Terms of Reference for PHSIGs, which will provide guidance to not only the PHSIGs in WA and NSW but also PHSIGs that may be formed in the future in other branches. Points of contact for the NSW and WA PHSIGs are as follows:
National Safety and Quality Framework The following advice has been received from the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care: The report from the consultation process on the proposed National Safety and Quality Framework can be found on the Commission's website at: http://www.safetyandquality.gov.au/internet/safety/publishing.nsf/Content/com-pubs_NSQF The final draft of the National Safety and Quality Framework will be publicly released after it has been presented to Health Ministers for endorsement in 2010. Feedback from the consultation process indicated widespread support for the Framework, as well as a need for information about how the elements in the Framework can be put into practice. To support this need, the Commission is developing a series of guides to support people to use the Framework. These guides will be released with the revised Framework.
