The Australian e-Health Research Centre (AEHRC) has celebrated going national!
Last week the AEHRC celebrated its evolution and the extension of the partnership to 2012 between CSIRO and the Queensland Government who established the Centre as a joint venture in 2003. CSIRO and the Queensland Government have committed a further $20 million to fund the Centre operations until 2012. The Centre has established research nodes around the country; Flinders Medical Centre, Royal Melbourne Hospital , Monash University and the University of Melbourne .

NEHTA launches career website
National E-Health Transition Authority has launched new e-health career website offering a variety of positions with the Authority.

Push for single clinical registry
Australian health authorities are seeking external consultants to apply and evaluate draft operating principles and technical standards for a series of clinical-quality registries, intended to improve patient care… given a lack of common standards, health authorities fear they will end up with a conflicting tangle of incompatible registries, impeding the long term goal of an effective electronic health system in Australia.

Epworth Eastern – First to trial paperless PBS prescribing
Epworth Eastern became the first hospital in Australia to trial paperless PBS prescribing in June this year, following approval from the Federal Department Health and Ageing (DoHA) and Medicare Australia. Medication charts (which act as PBS prescriptions at Epworth Eastern) are generated electronically on the hospital ward or in the doctor’s consulting room using MedChart software developed by a Canberra-based company HATRIX.

Updated version of SNOMED CT released
The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation has announced that a new version of SNOMED CT is now available. The international release, which is the second this year, has a series of refinements aimed at enabling clinicians to continue working with IT systems with minimal disruption to their daily routines.

Millions could be saved with 'paperless' clinical trials
Life sciences companies globally are turning to e-clinical solutions in order to improve inefficiencies and cut costs during the most expensive phase of drug development, says a new report titled In Pursuit of the Paperless Clinical Trial: A Look at EDC and CTMS. The British market analyst Datamonitor claims that - on average - life science companies spend between $12-$17 million yearly on mailings and copies of paper case report forms. With the implementation of e-clinical solutions, in particular electronic data capture and clinical trials management systems, a company could save anywhere from $10-$15 million a year on paper and postage alone, the report claims.

Internet crawling tool tracks disease outbreaks worldwide
An online project called HealthMap mines the Internet to look for disease outbreaks worldwide and plots the results on an online map, available for anyone to view and interact with. As reported in the July issue of PLoS Medicine, it extracts, categorizes, filters and integrates a variety of web-based data sources, even penetrating blogs, listservs, chatrooms, and online news reports.
