Working as a Health
Information Manager in South Australia |
| South
Australia is an active branch of HIMAA with Health Information Management
graduates working in a diverse range of roles. These include
management within public and private hospitals, advisory roles within
regional health services, working for the Department of Health and
private health insurers. South Australia is geographically dispersed
with approximately 60 country hospitals, 15 metropolitan hospitals
including 5 teaching hospitals, and over 20 private hospitals offering
HIM graduates a range of opportunities.
A HIM degree is not offered in South Australia and with limited access to new graduates HIMs are often recruited from interstate. This provides interstate graduates with the opportunity to take on a more challenging role earlier in their career. New graduates can call upon their colleagues and fellow HIMAA members to support their working needs. Adelaide used to be known as the city of churches and parks. The thriving tourist economy has now made it known for its wonderful beaches and wineries in the Barossa, Coonawarra, Clare and McLaren Vale Regions. It also offers a diverse range of sporting events such as cricket, tennis, football, car racing, as well as an abundance of conservation parks and the outback. HIMs wanting to visit friends and relatives interstate can readily do this on the weekend, as we are only 1 hour’s flight to Melbourne and just under 2 hours flight to Sydney. Once in Adelaide HIMs will soon realise that the city offers a much cheaper and superior standard of living compared to Eastern states. So when considering the alternatives for increasing your expertise in the Health Information Management arena don't forget to consider the opportunities that working in South Australia could provide you. Many HIMs initially move to Adelaide with a view to staying 2- 3 years but end up residing permanently in South Australia because they find the lifestyle so appealing.
