Bruce H Barraclough, AO MB BS FRACS DDU FACS

Bruce Barraclough is Chair of the Board of the NSW Clinical Excellence Commission. He is President of the International Society for Quality in Health Care, Associate Dean (Clinical Strategy) of the University of Western Sydney Medical School and e-Health Medical Director, CSIRO. He was President of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (1998 - 2001), Professor / Director of Cancer Services, Northern Sydney Health and the University of Sydney, (2000- 2005) and Chair of the Australian Council for Safety & Quality in Health Care (2000 - 2005).

 


Katy Gallagher 

Katy Gallagheris member for Molonglo in the current ACT Legislative Assembly, and holds the portfolio responsibilities of Health, Disability and Community Services, Children and Youth and Women. Katy Gallagher is a local Molonglo resident who was born in Canberra in 1970 and grew up in the newly settled Weston Creek area, attending Duffy Primary, Melrose High and, later, Stirling College. On completion of her University education at ANU, Katy was involved in the community sector in various children's services and disability programs. This included working with children with disabilities and then becoming an advocate as an organiser with the CPSU. Since being elected Katy has had the opportunity to work across a number of portfolios including Education, Industrial Relations, Health, Children, Disability and Women. This has enabled her to represent the ACT community at the highest level, advocating for change, reform and a good deal for the ACT.

 
Heather Grain

Heather Grain is a Health Informatician and HIM with more than 30 years experience in the development and implementation of electronic information systems in healthcare. She has served as a key member of national electronic health information projects in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific and holds the positions of Convenor of ISO TC215 Health Informatics - Semantic Content working group and Co-Chair of HL7 International Vocabulary Technical Committee. She is the Chair of Standards Australia IT14 - Health Informatics and Fellow and Secretary of the Australian College of Health Informatics, Australia's peak professional health informatics body.She has lead national and international activities on identification of patients and providers in healthcare, as well as mapping of terminology to classification and health data development and clinical decision support systems. Her research includes investigation of the ontological structures of clinical morbidity data, and the use of natural language processing as a clinical terminology implementation mechanism.

 
Julie Roediger

Ms Roediger became Deputy Director of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in early 2007. In this role she is responsible for the Institute's information management including its engagement with e-health as well as the Institute's data linkage activities. Ms Roediger has twenty years of experience in strategic planning and strategic information management having begun her career as an intelligence officer, then spent many years in strategic policy and planning functions within the Department of Defence. This included a period managing the Defence Knowledge Improvement Team. In 2004 Ms Roediger transferred to the Department of Health and Ageing as Assistant Secretary Economic and Statistical Analysis Branch. In this role she was responsible for improving the evidentiary base for policy development and program delivery across the Department. Ms Roediger has a Masters in Strategic Studies and Philosophy and Bachelors degrees in Arts (Asian Studies and Philosophy) and Science (Mathematics and Geology).

 
Michael Legg
BSc(Hons) MCom PhD FAICD FAIM FACHI MACS(PCP)

Michael is the President of HISA and Principal of Michael Legg and Associates, a consultancy in Information and Organisational Systems. He has more than 20 years experience in senior positions in the health industry. Before establishing ML&A he was Director Developments for Pathology, with what was then Australia's largest private health care group, Mayne, and before that General Manager of Southern Pathology, winners of the Australian Quality Award for Business Excellence. He has been involved for many years in health informatics standards setting with Standards Australia and HL7 and has served on many National Committees including the National Health Information Standards Advisory Committee and the Australian Health Information Council's subcommittee for Electronic Decision Support.

Kevin Burdette

Kevin joined BITG in 2007 and is responsible for the development and marketing activities for BITG's Health business across the ANZ region. He comes from a background in Communications & Information Systems and as a frontline Commercial Manager in the Technology, Environmental and Management Consulting sectors. Kevin has most recently worked with private companies and government departments across Australia to assist them with the understanding and management of programmatic and business risk and the associated process and cultural changes required for success.

Miriam Bluhdorn 

As a Health Information Manager, Miriam has worked in a range of roles, including as a clinical coder in the private hospital system and as medical records manager for a major metropolitan hospital. Under AusAID's Australian Youth Ambassador for Development program, Miriam has worked with local staff in Fiji to enhance the Fijian patient information system, and build capacity in clinical coding and records management. Miriam is now putting her international experience to good use at the Australian Institute for Health and Welfare, where she is responsible for METeOR, the AIHW's metadata online registry for data standards, and contributes towards the eHealth and statistics work program. Miriam is currently completing a Masters in International Public Health.  


Sally Goodenough

Sally Goodenough is a project manager at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, and at present is working on a project to explore the impact of eHealth on Australia's statistical data collections and analytical work. Sally has fifteen years' experience in designing information structures and managing information, including managing online access to university resources, indexing and classification of documents and publications for search and retrieval, subject thesaurus construction, and development of a metadata registry and associated quality processes to support better understanding of data and more consistent reporting within a large government agency. Sally has degrees in Arts (psychology), Economics and Asian Studies, and a Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Management, and is an associate member of ALIA.

Cheens Lee

Cheens Lee graduated from La Trobe University with a Bachelor of Health Information Management (Honours). He is currently at iSOFT as Solution Consultant (Billing) working on the Victorian HealthSMART Project implementation. Cheens also has an interest in Business Continuity Planning within healthcare organisations.'

 
Mary Durkin

Mary has worked in the public sector since 1980. In her early years in the public service she worked in public housing and aged care. From 1990 - 2000 she worked in the Attorney-General's Department in a range of areas, including Legal Aid, Human Rights, Family Law, Access to Justice and the Administrative Review Council.

From 2000 - 2004, Mary was the Deputy Director and then Acting Director of the National Film and Sound Archive.

In April 2004, Mary joined the Commonwealth Ombudsman's office. Her main area of responsibility was managing complaints about the Departments of Immigration and Citizenship and Defence. She was in the role of Deputy Ombudsman for the 10 months prior to taking up the position of Health Services Commissioner in the ACT on 23 July 2007.

Mary has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Tasmania and a Bachelor of Laws from the Australian National University. In 2008 she was awarded the Public Service Medal in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Sue Read

Sue Read is a Registered Psychologist who works as a Counselling Psychologist and Human Resources Consultant.

Sue has a particular interest in assisting individuals and organisations to attain optimal health, and achieves these aims by providing targeted interventions to address issues such as psychological injury, workplace conflict, and prevention and management of stress-related symptoms.

Sue has assisted many Australian Public Service Departments and Agencies and private organisations to achieve outcomes through individual and group programs in managing self, people and performance. She has conducted workshops and implemented interventions to address a range of issues such as stress management, emotional intelligence, change management, effective communication skills, work/life balance and trauma management.

 
Professor Jon Patrick 
Chair of Language Technology School of Information Technologies Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology University of Sydney.

Jon Patrick graduated with his PhD in Computer Science from Monash University in He has two degrees in Psychology and he is a registered psychologist. He has previously held the chairs of Information Systems at Massey University and at Sydney University. 

His early natural language processing work concentrated on processing systems for second language learners (English-Basque). More recently he developed the widely reported Scamseek system for the ASIC to detect financial scams on the Internet for which he was awarded the Eureka Science prize in 2005.

Since then he has worked on applying language technology to medical contexts. He has built a number of technologies with his collaborators and introduced the first real-time language processing system for ward rounds with his collaborators at the Intensive Care Service of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. 

His team has done over 50 projects in the last 3 years with many organisations including SEALS, SWAPS, NCCH, Westmead Hospital, Liverpool Hospital, NSW Health, Breast Cancer Institute, Children's Hospital Westmead, and the Kolling Institute. Most recently he has been working with the Sydney West Area Health Service to introduce a range of IT research technologies into their hospitals.

Anne Irwin
3M Health Information Systems

Anne has an extensive background in Health Information and Record Management holding both a Bachelor of Applied Science degree and an Associate Diploma in Medical Record Administration.  

Anne's professional experience extends into both the Public and Private Hospital segments having held management and administrative positions in institutions such as Westmead Hospital, Westmead Private Hospital, Parramatta Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. In addition to her professional roles Anne conducted lectures on a part time basis at The University of Sydney, Faculty of Health Sciences.

Anne was Executive Officer of HIMAA from January 1995 to October 1998 where she was responsible for establishing the first HIMAA national office and infrastructure.

Anne's most recent assignment before joining 3M Health Information Systems was with Ramsay Healthcare where she was responsible for the co-ordination and implementation of the admissions, medical records and case mix modules for there new patient administration system.

Kate Horkings 

Kate has more than twenty years of administrative experience in the health sector. This experience spans I.T., health information management, project and general management. 

Kate has worked at a number of healthcare agencies: P.A.N.C.H, Bundoora Extended Care Centre, Monash Medical Centre and Fairfield Hospitals. In addition Kate has worked as a consultant for 7 years servicing private hospitals, government agencies and software suppliers. 

Kate is a qualified Health Information Manager and also has Graduate Diplomas in Health Administration and Information Technology as well as a Master of Business in Information Technology. 

In 2002 Kate joined Southern Health and has held various roles including the HealthSMART Project Manager. Her current role is Health Information Services Operations Director.
